Since you are only testing this I would give it 1 vCPU and 4GB ram, virtual machines work better with less sounds ironic, but trust me flag Report. Thanks again all. What video ram have you given the guest?

Not made any difference. The PC is on, but showing black screen. Do you see anything during booting the VM? Can you boot it to safe mode? That is simply because in safe mode it uses default drivers and not the VMware tools.

It seems as though when VMware knows it has VMware Tools installed it stops handling certain resolutions correctly. All I did was open my VM\’s vmx file after shutting down the VM of course, since the file is overwritten on shutdown and changed this line:. And now I can maximise the VMware window again and the guest resizes correctly. Shared folders also still appear to work.

OK try this. I found the monitor resolution setting on the VM was set to \’use host settings for monitors\’. Which in my case was quite high. I can use the VM to edit files or do other simple tasks for long periods without problem but as soon as I go on a webpage that shows a video, I get the black screen. Note that \”black screen\” is only the guest screen that goes totally black.

That includes the windows task bar and everything else. The host is totally normal. Both times it stayed black for about 3 seconds. The second time it went black, I continued writing to see if it would get the key pressed, and it worked. The text I typed while screen was black was recorded correctly. I then deactivated it but it may be related to this problem, I do not remember what I did to activate it so it\’s not impossible that some part of it was not well deactivated, but I think it is.

I solved the problem myself so let me share the solution here for anyone else that has a similar problem. I have done two things but I am fairly sure I know which one solved the problem. I am including both things here in case I\’m wrong as I have no intention of investigating more unless somebody needs to know.

The x CPU is fairly recent and needed a motherboard firmware upgrade and the firmware seems to change often. I do not think it solved my problem. What probably solved the issue : When I booted the VM, I had a error \”cannot connect to sound stream\” I don\’t remember the exact wording.
