Part of the way I base my decision to purchase or not is to read the \”middle of the road\” reviews. Because \”reviews\” are typically subjective, I use them more as a means of getting an idea for what I\’m considering than allowing it to influence my decision to buy or not.

Ordinarily, if reviews influence that decision, is because there is an overwhelming preponderance one way or the other. With many items, especially computer software, there are way too many other \”unknowns\” that can affect performance After purchasing the Nikon\’s \”Camera Control Pro 2. I received the disk today and my experience has been no where even remotely close to the negative comments I read. To wit: 1 \”When I bought a new computer, it wouldn\’t let me install the program on the new computer using the installation key Having read the comments about the disk being an older program and not a more current version, I did have some reservations.

However, in the process of running the install program, it detected that I had a newer version already installed and installation of the disk version was stopping. I launched the version I already had on my computer, used the Product Key that came with the disk and it activated the newer version with absolutely no issues. That was on my laptop. I did the exact same thing on my desktop system with the exact same results. Both systems are bit running Windows 10 Professional.

All three of them, Nikon D, D and D appear to run flawlessly in the newer version of the software on both laptop and desktop. By the way; on the back of the box, the system requirements for using the software require Intel processors those are the only processors listed. My laptop is running an AMD A6 processor. My only negative regarding the software is the price. Price is a bit high but, if you\’re running Nikon equipment, it will behoove you to consider the Nikon software.

What captured my interest pardon the pun was of course the advantage of being able to see the images on PC immediately. The Leaf and Canon software I have seen in use ran very fast which is absolutely important here. How useful would any of this be if when shooting tethered to the PC the pictures started stacking up or heaven forbid froze the computer? So I downloaded a trial copy from Nikon first. I am pleased to say it runs fast. Previews pop up on screen in no more than one second, even when shooting tif on my D which are 35MB files.

What pleased me even more is that it ran equally fast on my notebook computer which does not have near the processor or graphics power of my desktop PC. You are managing 3 windows when working with your camera tethered to the PC. There is a preview window that is resizable showing the images very quickly.

It can be configured for different magnifications, single frame view or filmstrip view. A second, smaller, window shows a histogram and download status of the files as they are coming in. The third window is a camera control window that allows remote triggering and access to all on camera settings and menus. If you have a Nikon D3 or D you can also work in Live View on screen in both the handheld and tripod modes. Finally found a use for the Live View I suppose; which up until now I have found to be an extremely over hyped useless feature on the new Nikons.

Leaf and Canon give their remote capture software to their customers when they lay out thousands of dollars. This seems to be a notion that Nikon hasn\’t seen fit to subscribe to, yet.

Top reviews from other countries. Camera Control is pricey but it works. There are all sorts of free-ware or cheap versions out there. I tried them all but nothing came close to Nikon\’s own product in terms of ease-of-use and functionality. Firstly, check, check, and check again if and how it will work with your Nikon camera. Camera Control is a scaleable product in that the functionality of the software depends on what camera you have, and I\’ve read reports that it might not work as described for some older Nikon products.

I have a D and the software works great. I\’m using it with a 5m USB extension lead to extend the length of the ridiculously short Nikon, cable so you\’ll probably need one of these too. For video production it\’s great as you can preview the film on your Mac, shoot and it will transfer the video automatically after recording. Nice touch.

Note: If you don\’t understand the next comment then you don\’t need to worry about it. The only quibble I have is that there was no way of turning AEL on or off during video either in live or shooting mode. I still have to do this manually on the camera! But that was the only thing that Camera Control doesn\’t seem to support on the Nikon D I purchased this software to enable me to work my camera direct from my PC to speed up my shoots.
